James W. Rankin, Partner

For more than four decades, James “Jim” Rankin has provided general representation to a wide variety of clients in matters related to health care, antitrust, and commercial transactions. Jim also litigates cases in all tribunals.

Jim’s clients have included healthcare-related organizations such as the American Medical Association, BlueCross BlueShield Association, Specialty Boards for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Thoracic Surgery, and the American Veterinary Medical Association. He has represented BlueCross/BlueShield companies in Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Montana, New York, Oregon, and Pennsylvania.

Jim has also handled corporate transactions and other matters for Apache, Baxter, BCS Financial, Caremark, Centene, CF Industries, FMC, Harnischfeger, Motorola, Navajo Freight Lines, and S&C Electric.

After clerking for Judge Bernard M. Decker in the Northern District of Illinois, Jim joined the Chicago law firm Kirkland & Ellis, where he served as a partner from 1973 to 2010, prior to joining Hoogendoorn & Talbot.

Jim has tried and won several major cases from inception to conclusion, including:
